Asus changed their way of doing things with the launch of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 on May 2018 with a massive battery, good performance and Stock android experience which is the best part as they have changed their Zen UI which is filled with bloatware. Now as they have launched the next generation of this phone “The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2” Let us have a look at the detailed Review of this Phone.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 comes with a simple box which packs in the Phone itself at the top, a 10W Power adapter and an USB Cable even though it is having a massive 5000Mah battery it doesn’t come with a fast charger. A silicon case is also included in the box which fits well with the Phone.

Let’s start with the design, this phone is built on an aluminum frame with a plastic back and a corning gorilla glass 6 at the front. The display is a 6.26-inches, Full HD+ 19:9 IPS LCD Screen with a notch at the top. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Chipset (4x 2.2 GHz Kryo 260 Gold + 4x 1.8GHz Kryo Silver CPU) and an adreno 512 GPU. Speaking of memory there are three variants 3/4/6GB LPDDR4X RAM, 32/64GB eMCP storage, microSD expansion up to 2TB. The rear camera is a 12MP Sony IMX486, f1.8, 4K30 video with EIS, single LED flash, 5MP depth sensor. The front facing camera is a 13MP, f2.0, LED flash, 1080p30 video. It packs in a massive 5000mAh battery with 10W normal charging. Connectivity and network include Dual SIM, dual VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, microUSB, GPS/GLONASS/BDS/BeiDou/QZSS. Fingerprint sensor is mounted at the back and the Face Unlock is also present.

Detailed Review

Design and Build

Asus has done a little bit of cost cutting in terms of build quality as they have given a plastic back in this phone, but unlike Realme’s plastic back this phone felt premium and it felt like using a phone with a glass back. As the plastic is light, the chances of breakage when the phone falls down is also less. And the plastic insulates the heat so that we won’t feel so much of heat dissipation in our hand. Even though this phone packs in a 5000mAh battery they have evenly distributed the weight throughout the phone so that the phone feels very light.

Asus have given a Full HD+ display in this phone with a notch and the screen ratio is about 19:9, Display really looks good, bright color and even the sunlight visibility is damn good. Auto brightness sensor in this phone also works fine, Hardware wise the ASUS have done a great job in the display, but there is a problem regarding the notch which we will have a look when we discuss about software. And the protection for that display is undoubtably the best with Gorilla Glass 6 on top of everything, even phones like Oneplus 6 do not have this sort of Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

Biometrics and sound

The rear mounted fingerprint in this phone works fine they have improved the speed of the fingerprint unlocking from the previous generation Max Pro M1 but still the speed is not up to some Redmi and Realme Phones out there. The face unlock in this phone also works fine.

The speaker in this phone produces good quality sounds and is very loud. But when the volume of the phone is raised above 80% there is a distortion in sound, As the 3.5 mm headphone jack is still present, you can enjoy your favorite music with best headphones, as of my experience the sound could have been little louder.

Network and connectivity

The phone has support for dual sim and dual VoLTE so that you can use two 4G sim at the same time. But we faced an issue regarding the network, this phone struggled to capture 4G signal in areas with low signal, this will not be a problem if you are in a location with good 4G signal.

This phone also lacks 5GHz Wi-Fi it is limited to 2.5GHz so if you have a Wi-Fi connectivity with 5GHz bandwidth, this phone can’t utilize its full speed.

Memory and Storage

They have given three variants in this phone 3GB RAM with 32GB Storage, 4GB and 6GB RAM with 64GB Storage. You also have a dedicated Micro SD slot so Storage won’t be a problem.

As I have tested the 4GB RAM variant and I didn’t face any problem regarding RAM management, ASUS have really done a great job in RAM management. This phone has one of the best RAM management out there. This phone can manage about 10-15 apps in memory even heavy games like Asphalt is managed very well in memory.

This phone comes with a Stock android experience and ASUS have promised security patch updates once in every two months. Out of the box this phone comes with Android Oreo but asus have promised android pie update within January. There is not at all any Bloatware in the software and is fine. But as I said earlier there is a problem with notch optimization notch is not at all adopted for this phone, most of the time it hides the contents and options in this phone, Hope ASUS will fix this with a software update.

Even though this phone is having WideVine L1 certification it doesn’t stream Netflix in HD, this may be some problem with the software which can be fixed later.

Gaming and Performance

This phone packs in a Snapdragon 660 processor with adreno 512 GPU so gaming won’t be a problem, but the I got many questions comparing this phone and the Honor play as the Price of the honor play has been cut down recently, So my opinion is that if gaming is your preference you can go with the Honor Play because if you want to play PUBG mobile Honor play can play the game in High settings and Asus can do it in Medium settings only. As this phone is a plastic back I did not feel any heat in the hand even after playing hours of PUBG.

Battery and Charging

This phone is a battery beast you can even get 9-10 Hours of Screen On Time, If you are a light user you can charge this phone once in two days, For heavy users the battery would stand for about 1.5 days. But the sad thing is they haven’t given any fast charging support for this phone it takes about 2 Hours 50 Minutes to achieve a full charge.

Camera Performance

The rear camera is a 12MP Sony IMX486, f1.8, 4K30 video with EIS, single LED flash, 5MP depth sensor. The front facing camera is a 13MP, f2.0, LED flash, 1080p30 video

The stock camera app does no good to the camera, but the best thing is as the camera 2 api is enabled you can easily install google camera in this phone which works really great with this phone. Some of the camera samples are given below.

This is Really a good phone, if you have any plan for buying this phone I would suggest you to go for the one with 4GB RAM which is the best for 15,000 Rs.

This is one hell of an awesome midrange smartphone
